4 C’s: Diamond Carat

A carat is a measure of weight rather than a reference to size. One carat is equal to 200 miligrams. One carat can also be divided into 100 ‘points’. A 50 point diamond is the same as a half carat diamond. Larger diamonds are more rare than smaller ones, therefore the value of larger stones rise exponentially with carat weight. Since larger stones are found less frequently in nature a 1 ct stone will cost much more then twice as many 1/2 carat stones of the same color, clarity and cut.
The cut of the stone and the mounting it is set in can make a diamond appear larger or smaller. You can call us at 1-866-967-GEMS (4367) and we will be happy to explain how this can affect the look of your stone.
Size can dramatically affect the price so careful consideration has to be taken when choosing what size is best for you. If it is the most important of the 4 C’s and you are trying to maximize the size with a limited budget, try choosing a well cut stone of a lower color and clarity.
